The Tip

I’ve heard people saying they don’t like to grow cuttings using the tip of a branch, but I’ve had good results with them.

I have a feeling different parts of the branch are storing different amounts of hormones and energy. Pictured is the leftovers from a bunch of cuttings i procured recently. I’ll put 10 of them in a moist coco coir cup and see what happens.

Does anyone have any preference to which part of the branch they use?

Seedling looks great. How's it taste?

As far as tips, I'm probably one of the people you've heard say don't use 'em. Or at least I don't use 'em. I like thick cuttings, and you don't get that in one season. A lot of people like tip growth because they know it's first-year wood, which in theory means it'll root faster. A lot of old school people say they root best, but some of us new school guys disagree. One downside of using actual tip growth, even when compared to only first-year wood, is that it's thin. It's easy to dry out.

The fig was moderately sweet and had a rich berry flavor. I was only able to try a few but the skin was a little tough from being baked by the sun. Hopefully I’ll be able to get some fruit next year.
