Guerilla Gardening? - (Layering)

A lot of people get caught up in air layering which is a fancy gravity-defying form of layering. It's great but so often I hear people dismiss (or even don't know about) regular layering, or its results. You take a low branch, put it under some dirt, and anchor the branch down so it stays in the dirt. I got these bad boys off a twenty foot tree. I could have let them root longer but this may (or may not) have been an exercise in stealthy guerilla gardening.

Lmao. My car looks similar . I even drive around with special cut and grab pruners in my trunk just in case a seedling is out of reach.

I like the idea of gorilla gardening.

yeah I have my own pruners AND loppers for in-car use. I also have a Google Maps list of fig trees in my area (and mushroom spots, pawpaws, pecans, all kinds of wild forage stuff). Does your car ever look this bad? (photos from same trip)

I did the same map thing with seedlings and random sidewalk fig trees. I even have pictures with geolocations. Very clever and resourceful of us.

Been there done that 😀 .
My daughter: “there’s an ant in here.” Prior to picking my kids up from school I had found a seedling. It’s a real addiction. Getting me to exercise too.

dude I can't wait to see these seedlings you keep telling me about. I'm shocked more people aren't talking about this. New varieties emerging on the market to challenge the old greats... it's every fig youtuber's wet dream as far as content is concerned. You should for sure make a post about each one of them. Not like one post with all of them in it... although once your catalogue gets big enough that would be useful... but like a thread for each one, with photos, stories, updates on the tree over time, questions, comments, all the things.

Now when you plant these will you cut them up or stick them in your growing medium . I had luck with branches about that size . But when I tried one that size I got a nice brown stick.

Not everyone thinks like you and I. I thought everyone would be happy.

When my I258 and BMKK grow fruit next year, I’ll be able to tell you if my seedling finds hold up to them.

Honestly, the only commercial variety I’ve tried is BT. It was disgusting! Even my neighbor’s caprified BT was gross compared to some of the things I’ve found.

You’ll be the first on my list if I ever distribute my FiaTeo Fig .

They were twice this length when I started. This was post-cutting them up. They are the same height as me now. They already had roots on them, so I don't have to go through the rooting process all over again. It'll take some time, but I did this back in April and got about 30 trees out of it. These were all rooted through sucker propagation

Did it have roots to begin with or just a cutting? I'd say it's too tall to do as a cutting without roots, but I've had luck with things like this before

Nah mine didn’t have roots. In fact the owner of the tree had just cut it off an hour before. But I took about fifty smaller cuttings of that branch that I was able to root.
