Description
Roja is a compelling classic of Mediterranean fig cultivation, originating from the Balearic Islands—specifically around Algaida on Mallorca—where it was long cultivated both for human consumption and livestock feed. This variety is Bifera , meaning it regularly produces two crops per season: a large Breba crop (spring-summer) and a substantial Main crop (summer-autumn).
The fruit of Roja tends to be egg-shaped to somewhat elongated, with a skin that matures from a reddish-brown to purplish hue; the pulp inside is described as amber or pinkish-red, juicy and rich in flavor. Brebas of this variety can be exceptionally large—reports indicate weights approaching 170 g in favourable years.
In terms of performance, it is valued for good resistance to rain damage—especially in its Mediterranean origin—and for its high productivity in both crops. The leaves are noted to show a majority of 3-lobed form, with fewer 5- or 7-lobed leaves.
Roja is a distinguished Mediterranean fig cultivar with strong heritage, notable size (especially in Breba crop), and appealing pigments and flavor. While relatively robust, it does require adequate growing conditions to fully express both crops. For collectors, it represents a valuable addition—especially if you’re pursuing Mediterranean-origin, historically significant fig varieties. Do ensure source authenticity and growing conditions align with its origin for best results.
When adding Roja to a collection, note the following important characteristics and potential caveats:
Crop behavior: Because it is Bifera , it offers both Breba and Main crop —an advantage in climates long enough to support them.
Skin and flesh: The reddish-brown/purple skin and amber to pink-red pulp are visually striking and flavorful, placing Roja in the “dessert fig” category among Mediterranean varieties.
Climate adaptation: While originating in a mild Mediterranean zone, some growers report that younger plants or those in cooler pot-conditions may under-perform or show delayed cropping. One forum grower remarked on the difficulty of potted conditions and questioned authenticity of some sources.
