Description
This one makes my top 10 for sure in taste alone.San Donato Di Ninea Mountainside courtesy of Frank
Taste? Well, when San Donato first hits the tongue, you get the impression of a light, effervescent, capricious, little thing flirting with you..a passing fancy...eye candy. But then the second wave washes over the taste buds. Bam! This is serious, substantial, rich, full-bodied intelligent fig marrow teasing the olfactory and gustatory receptors as it passes the mouth on its way to the esophagus. In a word..exquisite.
Bluemalibu also described this fig as a "well deserving of a prime orchard location".
San Donato d' Ninea is a Mt Etna class fig with a very powerful flavor twist. In Mediterranean climes, it ripens a prolific crop around Aug 18 of small, soft skinned figs that really pack a punch. These intensely flavored figs have an earthy, rich presence like unto a berry brandy. San D- is a common (parthenocarpic) fig that is well deserving of a prime orchard location, as it is a refreshing change from the standard berry-flavored fare. The figs are able to dry on the tree without spoiling, which then creates probably the tastiest treat that one could imagine. A 'fruit leather' or 'fruit roll-up' that is incredible. We rate it a 9/10 fresh... and a perfect 10/10 when allowed to dry some.
