Description
Charles on 7-17-14:
-Dr. Gowaty, is a fig that has been in my family for 60+ years. My grandparents who lived in northern Alabama recieved it from their neighbor Dr. Gowaty. Mr. Gowaty was orginally from Israel and he'd often take vacations there to visit with family and friends. He ultimately brought back cuttings of a tree that was growing on his families property. The flavor is sweet like honey with berry undertones. It has particularly large seeds with a good crunch that adds a bit of nuttiness. I tend to like varieties with large seeds.
From Charles:
Dr. Gowaty comes from my grandparents farm in Northern Alabama. The tree is over 60 years of age and is never protected during the winter. The history of this fig comes from my grandparents neighbor. Dr. Gowaty took a trip to Israel to visit family and friends in his home town. He subsequently brought back cuttings from the tree that was on his families property.
This variety is the most vigorous out of all the trees I currently own. It produces two main crops of figs, that as you can see are fairly large. During dry weather they will indeed dry on the tree. They are very tasty figs. The fruit has a hint of berry flavor and is not overly sweet with a bit of acidity. The eye is fairly tight and holds up well to rain while the flavor does not get washed away.
