Description
Três Num Prato 1 is a traditional Portuguese fig variety collected and documented in the Algarve as part of a national conservation effort. Known in some circles as Três ao Prato, this fig produces medium-sized, violet-tinged green fruit with a vibrant dark red pulp. The flavor is balanced—pleasantly sweet with a touch of acidity—offering a medium to good overall quality.
Its fruit is pyriform (pear-shaped) and oblong, with a small Ostiole and slight longitudinal skin splitting as it nears full maturity. The fig holds well during handling and transport, thanks to its notably tough skin. This makes it especially attractive for fresh market sales or grower-to-grower exchanges where spoilage during transit is a concern.
The tree itself is of medium vigor with an open growth structure, and it does not require Caprification . The leaves are medium in size and typically 3- to 5-lobed. It has a productive Main crop (vindimos) but is not known to produce a Breba crop.
Despite its name being similar to “Três um Prato” as recorded in Bobone's 1932 catalog and echoed by Condit in his UC Davis monograph, this particular version diverges from the Smyrna -type that requires pollination. The version propagated and evaluated by João Costa and Armindo Rosa was a Self-Fertile fig, which sets it apart from the older descriptions and has led to some confusion in modern fig-collecting circles.
The first formal modern classification of Três Num Prato 1 came in 2020 from researchers João Costa and Armindo Rosa, as part of the Colecção DE Figueiras do Algarve. They separated it from Três Num Prato 2 based on its lack of Caprification requirement and differences in morphology and internal flesh color.
