Description
Fouskounia (also known as Difora Fouskounia) is an evocative heirloom fig from Peloponnisos, Greece, introduced to U.S. growers by Andreas Patras. This variety yields medium-to-large, dark-purple fruits with a thin yet resilient rind. When cut open, the interior is deep red and jam-like, showcasing tender, nearly seedless flesh. Its flavor is rich and berry-forward, balanced with moderate sweetness and a lightly complex undertone that reviewers describe as reminiscent of ripe blackberries—with both body and finesse reddit.com+15figaholics.com+15figbid.com+15.
According to Figaholics, who trialed Fouskounia in California, Fouskounia is likely a common-type ( Parthenocarpic ) fig, meaning it sets fruit without Caprification —though further verification is needed. Its productive nature and reliable performance—despite humid conditions—have made it popular among Mediterranean-climate growers.
As of 2020 from the figaholics.com sales page:
Fouskounia is another Greek fig introduced by Andreas and it has grown very well for us, producing abundantly. The large fruits are Black with a very nice berry flavor of moderate intensity and moderate sweetness and very jammy. This variety is reportedly a common type fig but this has not yet been verified.
