Description
The Wuhan fig is a distinct cultivar purporting to originate from the region of Wuhan, China, although its full genetic origin remains somewhat obscure. The fruit typically presents with dark purple to Black skin and a bright amber-yellow interior, a contrast that draws attention among Black -skinned fig types. According to multiple nurseries, the flavour profile is described as mildly honey-sweet with possible grape-like undertones when grown in favorable conditions.
One grower-review states that when grown in warm climates (e.g., USDA Zone 9) the pulp may shift toward a light red tint when caprified, but the consensus remains that the Wuhan fig is self-fruiting (common type) and does not require fig- Wasp pollination. The tree is reported to have medium-sized fruit, an upright growth habit, and leaves that are notably large and distinct in shape according to vendor descriptions.
OneGreenWorld product description: “A very productive variety originating in Wuhan, China … dark purple to Black skin and a bright yellow interior.”
PlantLust description: “Wuhan produces large pear shaped dark purple to Black figs with a light amber to strawberry flesh … closed eye … good choice for south/SE.”
Figurehologist/MountainFigs commentary on cultivar authenticity: includes the Wuhan fig in a “dubious dozen” list of lesser-verified fig names.
