Description
Bordissot Verda is a traditional Balearic fig cultivar of Ficus carica from the historic fig collections of Montserrat Pons i Boscana in Llucmajor, Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). It is part of the broader Bordissot family of figs — a group of cultivars distinguished by their flattened or squat fruit shapes and diverse skin and pulp colours. Montserrat Pons documented numerous Bordissot variants, of which Verda (“green”) is one of the rarer and more distinctive types.
Bordissot Verda produces medium-sized, urceolate figs with a light green to yellow-green exterior — a striking colour that sets it apart from many other Palma or Mediterranean fig types. Inside, the pulp is rose-coloured to pink-red, moderately juicy, and on ripe trees offers a sweet, refreshing fruity flavour that many collectors appreciate for fresh eating.
The skin is thin and tender, and the Ostiole (eye) shows red scales, which can be a helpful identifying feature. Average fruit weight is reported around 35 g, with fruit dimensions roughly 45 × 38 mm on typical specimens.
Bordissot Verda was originally found in the historic fig orchard “Son Peixet” in the “La Marina” district of Llucmajor — a property associated with the Julià i Gallard family. The variety was planted there by a previous generation in the late 19th century (c. 1880–1890), giving it both heritage and deep regional roots in Mallorcan horticulture.
It was later preserved and cultivated in the Montserrat Pons i Boscana fig collection, which has become one of the most thorough repositories of traditional Balearic fig genetics, including many rare Bordissot variants.
