Description
The Figue DE Solliès is a distinguished fig variety—technically from the bourjassotte noire lineage—celebrated for its drop-shaped, violet to Black ribbed exterior and firm yet tender texture. Under its thin yet resilient skin lies flesh resembling strawberry jam, with a bright red color, numerous fine beige seeds, and a juicy, glossy mouthfeel. The flavor is elegantly balanced: sweet and tart, with vegetal and fruity notes evoking watermelon, strawberry, melon, rhubarb, and subtle florals, starting crisp and finishing smooth and meltingly tender.
Cultivated exclusively within a defined terroir in Provence, figs are grown on terraces and hillsides near the Gapeau valley, amid olive trees and vines. Production is entirely hand-harvested between 15 August and 15 November by pedestrian-access orchards, pruned in goblet form to remain accessible without ladders. Harvesting and conditioning must occur within the certification zone to preserve freshness—a hallmark of this AOP product.
Fig cultivation in Solliès dates back to antiquity, with mentions alongside mid-19th-century records describing local varieties. By the early 20th century, the area produced over 1,100 tons annually. Modern recognition via AOP has revitalized its reputation and fostered sustainable and standardized production across over 120 hectares and roughly 30,000 trees with around 100 producers.
📍 AOP / AOC Designation
Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) status was granted by a French decree on 28 June 2006, making it the only fig variety in France with AOC designation. Recognized as Appellation d’Origine Protégée (AOP) across the EU since December 2011, and fully enforced from 1 January 2012. Only fig production from specified villages around Solliès‑Pont in the Var department (15 communes) can legally bear the name “Figue DE Solliès AOP”. Fruit must meet strict standards: at least 40 mm diameter, the characteristic shape and color, sugar levels ≥ 14° Brix, and precise flavor/aroma profile—ensuring consistent quality and authenticity. If you'd like your banner to be shown here and throughout Fig Database, send us a message.
