Description
By Dan Maloon on September 28, 2020:
This tree was found growing wild on a freeway embankment in central California. It is naturalized, growing in full all day sun on an exposed site. This site receives about 14" of rain each year. It produces a moderate crop of large sized figs with the ability to make very large figs. The flavor is a very rich dark honey. The seeds are soft, few and complement the flesh. The overall bite is satisfying, meaty and balanced. Every part of the fig melds into each other making it very enjoyable. Some other observations Figs did not split following two weeks of rain during the season. FMV has been seen on my tree but not noticed on the mother tree. First year cuttings produced no figs. Medium growth rate. I believe that with proper growing conditions and pollination, this tree will yield reliably excellent figs.
Dan Maloon told me (Rigo) on 8-17-22 that last year (2021) he put out that this variety would not be good for the home growing. I asked him if he completely got rid of the tree or sold/shared it with anyone and this was his respond:
"No I still have a growing here atm but I put the location out in the group and there's two other people selling it under different names. So whatever however you want to do it I don't care. No I never sold it or gave it away to anyone though."
The Fig Hunter® renamed it Lathrop and Robert Locke renamed it Manthey Rd. So both of these become synonyms of Cali Ghost.
