Description
Since its such a recent discovery it's Unknown what type of fig it is; common or Smyrna . The fig is green skinned (nb: growing in the shade, sunlight may change this?), and the skin is very thin. Inside of a perfectly ripe fig, the pulp is a mulberry jam colour deep purple, so dark it is almost Black . The texture was thick and gooey and taste was like mulberry and dark plum. The fig tree was found growing wild surrounded by caprifigs and a few other edible figs south of Perth, Western Australia. The appearance of the trees, the location and historic satellite images all point toward a Deep Purple being a seedling. Young seedlings abound in the area as well, and of course the Wasp is also present. The coastal plain of Perth and surrounds is a karstic limestone which gives rise to numerous wetland systems. It's in these wetland systems that figs really seem to take hold and it's here that I've focussed my efforts on fig hunting. There are literally hundreds, possibly thousands of trees. Deep Purple is one of the trees that was stumbled upon while out hunting these wetlands. Cuttings have been shared locally and hopefully in time we'll know if the tree is common or Smyrna and just how it grows in cultivation (timing, size, skin colour, etc). So far it seems to be easy to Root .
