Description
Gerasimos a fig variety named after Katrina's grandfather is a traditional Greek fig from the island of Corfu that has proven to be a productive and adaptable variety in cooler climates. A tree planted in southeast Portland has grown in-ground for over fifteen years and reliably ripens both Breba and main crops, even in the Pacific Northwest climate. The fruit is medium to large, averaging around 60–70 grams, with a very soft skin and juicy interior that often appears almost syrupy when cut. The pulp is sweet and refreshing rather than thick and jam-heavy, offering a classic “sugar fig” flavor with gentle berry notes and a pleasant seed crunch.
Growers report the figs ripen easily and hold well on the tree without dropping, even when young plants are grown in pots. The variety has shown strong productivity compared to similar sweet figs like LSU Tiger, producing consistent crops instead of aborting fruit. With both Breba and main crops ripening in Oregon’s zone-9 climate, Gerasimos appears well adapted to temperate regions and maritime conditions. Its delicate skin, juicy flesh, and balanced sweetness make it an excellent fresh-eating fig that highlights the classic flavor profile of Greek island varieties.
