This fig was rescued by fig hunter Leanne, also known as SacredOrigin, out in California in 2018. This fig is named after the fire which almost consumed it: the Carr Fire fig. The ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ฝ๐จ๐บ๐ป๐จ๐ป๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ Carr fire burned over 200,000 acres and over 1,000 homes. The west side of the tree was burned and many of the limbs were cut off, but firefighters saved most of the tree. The Carr fig has made a proud and glorious comeback as an icon of resilience and strength for those who escaped the flames.
The mother tree to the Carr Fire fig is estimated by Velda Crotty, Leanne's friend and the original source for this fig's location, to be around 40 feet at the canopy with an extensive network of supporting branches and fruiting wood. It is believed this tree started as a seedling around the time of construction of Whiskeytown Dam and Powerhouse in the early part of the Century or even earlier possibly by seeded figs passed on by miners in the area. Mrs. Crotty was asked to tell us a little bit about the tree, and this is what she provided:

The taste of this black beauty is best described as a "cherry-berry" fruit flavor, with unmistakable fig undertones and a velvety smooth skin. The skin has no bitterness but adds complexity to the overall flavor. Take one bite of the fig as a whole, and the skin just melts in your mouth followed by the fruity fig goodness to follow. Due to the syrupy and sweet berry flavor, this is a diverse fig -- wonderful to make a berry fig jam, eat whole, or even dry and save for a sweet chewy treat at a later time. This tree produces 2 great crops, a breba and main crop to provide plenty of figs.
Millennial Gardener had this to say about the strain he procured:
