Description
This description is for the Jason's Unknown Black Ischia, poorly named as it is clearly not Black Ischia. It is believed by many to be Negretta but without genetic testing it would be impossible to be certain. Small to medium sized dark purple fig, with white spots on the surface, excellent quality when allowed to become completely ripe. Ripening season starts about the same as the Mt Etna family - late August in Zone 6a. Some similarities to the Bordeaux family of figs - the leaves can be a little similar, they have a definite pink stem. The figs have a purplish color from a very early age. Flavor is not quite as unique as members of the Bordeaux family like VdB but I believe this fig may be in this family. It has at least some degree of cold hardiness, having survived two Zone 6a winters with protection.
