Description
Zaffiro is a striking Italian heirloom fig originating from Nicolò Parrino ’s “Fig Arts by Nikky” collection. It has deep purple to almost Black skin, beneath which lies a luscious yellow-to-amber pulp reminiscent of caramel custard . Its flavor is frequently described as rich, honey-sweet but not cloying, with complex notes of citrus, nut, coconut, cinnamon, persimmon, and even subtle banana or caramel undertones.
A vigorous and prolific grower, Zaffiro produces a long-ripening, single Main crop and is notably Self-Fertile (common type), thriving without pollination. The tree adapts well to containers and in-ground planting, though it can be difficult to Root . It features excellent resistance to rain and humidity, with a small or closed Ostiole that helps prevent splitting and spoilage.
Introduced by Italian grower Nicolò Parrino of Fig Arts By Nikky, and sometimes referred to as Trinacria, this variety is celebrated by enthusiasts like Eric Durtschi and Brian M. as one of the finest sugar figs in modern collections.
In essence, Zaffiro delivers a luxurious honey-fig experience with tropical and spice overtones, supported by robust growth and adaptability—making it a standout in fig collections worldwide.
Zaffiro from Nikky is an excellent sugar fig. One of VERY few that I am keeping in my collection.

Zaffiro comes from Nikky in Italy. What a unique variety consisting of a honey flavor with a dark purple skin. It’s really sweet and good. Not sugar sweet like LSU Purple or Kadota. It’s common and vigorous growing.
