Description
Mehdi’s Famous Fig is an Iranian heirloom selection introduced into North American collections by a grower named Bobby (aka figologist) whose father (which the variety was named after) brought the tree out of Iran in the late 1980s. It’s a vigorous, common (self-fruiting) variety that shows a distinctive split personality: the Breba crop tends toward rich caramel/brown-sugar notes with concentrated sweetness, while the Main crop is more berry-forward with jammy, high-brix flesh. Trees fruit early for their size, dry exceptionally well on the tree, and show reliably strong yields without an obvious tendency to split in the growers’ reports. The variety appears easy to Root and vigorous in pots and in ground plantings, making it appealing for collectors who want a fast-growing, dessert-style fig with both drying and fresh-eating potential.
