Description
Tremendous fig in terms of flavor, vigor and productivity. Marseilles Black VS is a Mt. Etna type fig with a black exterior and a dark red fruit inside. The leaves are generally five-lobed and the tree produces medium-sized figs. While the edible skin can be semi-chewy, it is not very tough like some other varieties. It is early ripening, and it is a sturdy fig that is hardy to zone 5 in the ground.
Marseilles Black VS is one of the most popular dark berry figs for growing in ground in colder regions. Can be maintained as a 6' bush or 10' tree, also grows well in containers.

This is a very good quality fig, similar to Mt Etna class figs in leaf shape, fig season, and fig color, flavor and size. Some feel that the flavor is superior to many of the other Mt Etnas. It has reportedly good cold tolerance and is very productive. The first link has a good compilation of the history of this fig in the US. Despite this history, no one is really sure if this is the same as an old French variety Marseilles Black or not.Similar Varieties
