Internal Honey

Internal Honey is a term used for thick syrupy juice that can form in very ripe figs.. . Internal Honey is most useful when it is tied to the exact plant part, season, cultivar, and growing conditions being described.

Internodal Length

In horticulture, Internodal Length describes the distance between two nodes on a stem.. . Internodal Length is most useful when it is tied to the exact plant part, season, cultivar, and growing conditions being described.

Internode

An internode is the section of stem between two nodes. Nodes are the points where leaves, buds, branches, or fruiting structures arise.

On fig cuttings and shoots, internode length can reveal growth vigor, light conditions, and shoot maturity. Short internodes often make a cutting easier to fit into propagation setups because more nodes are present in a shorter piece of wood.

Ira J. Condit

(1883–1981) was an American horticulturist who studied subtropical fruits, including the fig, the olive, and the avocado. His contributions to the fig community were extensive. In addition to his exhaustive fig research, testing, and breeding, he wrote a number of books on figs, including: The Kadota Fig, Fig Characteristics Useful in the Identification of Varieties, Fig Culture in California, The Fig, Caprifigs and Caprification, and the comprehensive tome, Fig Varieties: A Monograph.

Iron Chlorosis

Iron chlorosis is yellowing caused by insufficient available iron in the plant, often showing as yellow tissue between green veins on newer leaves. It is commonly related to high pH, poor root function, cold wet media, or nutrient imbalance rather than simply the absence of iron in the soil. In figs, iron chlorosis should be diagnosed by pattern and growing conditions. Correcting drainage, pH, root health, or media problems may be more important than repeatedly adding iron without addressing why the plant cannot use it.

Irrigation Interval

Irrigation Interval means the time between watering events in practical plant language. . For Irrigation Interval, the practical interpretation depends on the growing setup: container or in-ground tree, drainage, watering pattern, sunlight, season, and local weather.

ISO

ISO means “in search of.” Fig collectors use it when looking for a cultivar, cutting, plant, or piece of information. The abbreviation is useful in trading discussions but does not describe the fig itself. When responding to an ISO request, accurate labels, legal shipping, and honest source history matter.

Jammy Texture

Jammy Texture means soft dense texture like cooked fruit preserves in practical plant language.. . Jammy Texture is most useful when it is tied to the exact plant part, season, cultivar, and growing conditions being described.

JFE

JFE (Just Fruits & Exotics): A respected nursery located in Crawfordville, Florida, Just Fruits & Exotics (JFE) is known for offering regionally adapted fig varieties and other fruit trees suited to the Southeastern U. S. climate. While not a breeding institution, JFE has contributed to the fig community by distributing strong-performing selections, some of which have become associated with the nursery due to their reliability in humid and subtropical zones. The nursery is credited with introducing or circulating fig variants such as JFE Black Madeira (Not)—a mislabeled but high-quality cultivar with excellent productivity—and LSU Improved Celeste (JFE strain), valued for its early ripening and resistance to rain splitting. In fig-collecting circles, the "JFE" prefix typically denotes that a particular plant was either sourced from or popularized by this nursery. Because of its emphasis on real-world performance under challenging growing conditions, JFE is often referenced as a trusted source for fig trees in USDA zones 8–10. Just Fruits & Exotics

JH

Joseph (Joe) Hood Joe Hood is a fig enthusiast from Austin, Texas, credited with discovering and introducing the JH Adriatic fig around 2001 when he noticed a mature green Adriatic-type fig tree on his property. Recognizing its exceptional flavor, appearance, and productivity, he propagated it and began sharing cuttings, lending the cultivar its “JH” initials to distinguish it from traditional Adriatic figs. To the left you see Joe's original mother tree on his property. And here you can see a note, attached to the variety with exactly what Joe said about it.

JM

JM is a provenance abbreviation used in some fig-collecting contexts. When attached to a variety name or strain, it should be preserved as part of the source history rather than expanded beyond what can be verified.

Because several initials can overlap in collector communities, Fig Database should avoid guessing a full person or organization name unless it is confirmed by reliable site records or owner knowledge.

JOMF

JOMF stands for Just One More Fig, a phrase used in fig-growing communities to describe the collector’s habit of adding another cultivar even when space is limited.

It is community slang rather than a horticultural category. In Fig Database, it helps explain forum and collector language that new growers may encounter.

Jon Herman

Vasile Surugiu (aka Herman2 / Hermansur) Vasile Surugiu is an active fig collector who gained recognition through the online forum Figs4Fun under the username Herman2, and later as Hermansur on eBay. He is known for introducing and popularizing specific fig variety strains, notably the Marseilles Black VS (MBVS). Marseilles Black VS is characterized by its early season ripening, dark-black exterior, deep red flesh, and good cold tolerance—qualities praised by many collectors in colder growing zones. This strain is commonly associated with Surugiu due to his early distribution of cuttings online and its frequent mention as “Herman’s variety” on various forums. Though detailed information about Vasile's background is limited, his impact is reflected in the enduring popularity of Marseilles Black VS. Collectors credit him with making the variety accessible and distinguishing this strain as a cold-hardy, flavorful Mt. Etna-type fig. The “VS” suffix in the name commonly refers to his initials—or perhaps “Vasile’s Strain”—recognizing his role in its modern distribution.

Juvenile Growth

Juvenile growth is early, immature growth that may differ from mature growth in leaf shape, vigor, branching, or fruiting behavior. Many perennial plants pass through juvenile phases before consistent flowering or fruiting. Fig seedlings can show juvenile behavior before they reveal mature fruit traits. Even rooted cuttings from mature cultivars may produce unusually vigorous or atypical leaves while establishing.

KK

KK is a fig-collector abbreviation associated with Keith Karausky provenance, most often encountered in names such as Black Madeira KK. It helps distinguish a sourced strain from other circulating material with similar names.

As with any strain abbreviation, KK should be recorded accurately but not treated as a stand-alone cultivar description. Source history, fruit observations, and comparison with other strains remain important.
